Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located in southern banks of Brahmaputra River in Morigoan district of Assam, India. It is one of place where the grasslands and wetlands are suited for Assam’s famous animal – One Horned Rhinoceros.
A relatively unknown for most of the travellers who visit Assam, Pobitora is a gem of its kind. It is mostly unexplored and is closest to the wilderness to the city of Guwahati. Pobitora was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1987. The sanctuary has a total area of 38.8sqkm and it has around 27 villages sharing border with it. Pobitora is home to One-Horned Rhinos however, you would surely find some of the other animals staying at these grasslands.
From the largest city of Assam, Guwahati Pobitora is around 50kms and is connected by well-built roads. Apart from Guwahati Railway station, you can also visit Pobitora via Jagiroad railhead which is nearest to the wildlife sanctuary. From here you can visit taking road connectivity.
Pobitora Wildlife is minimal yet it is one of the main wildlife sanctuaries for One-Horned Rhinoceros. By the joint effort of Government of Assam and Ministry of Environment and Forestry along with nearby NGO’s, they have identified this sanctuary for the program of Indian Rhino Vision (IRV-2020). Under this program, they have concentrated on mostly of conservation and protection of one-horned rhinoceros.
During the last rhino census, it is estimated that Pobitora roughly has around 102 rhinos and the number is growing steadily. And under the program of IRV-2020, they have successfully bred these rhinos and some of them have been shifted to the nearby Manas National Park. What makes Pobitora a perfect place for Rhinos is that its presence of grassland which is a perfect habitat for these animals. Apart from rhinos, you can also notice water buffaloes and which are second-most sighted animals here.
Apart from rhino, the wildlife sanctuary is also home to a lot of birds which makes bird watchers and ornithologists coming here from all around the world to witness some of the migratory birds which arrive during the migratory season. Some of the birds which have made Pobitora as its home include lesser whistling teal, black-necked stork, red-wattled lapwing and little egret.
When you visit Pobitora, you are in for a treat as the sanctuary is less of tourists and more of nature. You need to pay a nominal fee of Rs 50 as this is for a forest entry permit. You can tour the sanctuary via Jeep or elephant rides where Jeep safari is available from 06:30 -15:00 hrs and elephant rides are only available in the morning. A jeep safari costs Rs 1300 for 6 people ride and an elephant safari costs Rs 500 per person.
