This is a big step, where the US government has added a third gender option in their passport. And thus, US travellers can select whatever gender they would like to display on their passports. This decision was announced by the state government on June 30, which was the last day of the pride month.
This decision was undertaken to help transgender and non-binary people to travel. As per the government new policy, travellers will no longer have to provide medical certification to change their gender marker. Passport holders with no gender marker can now request a new passport while new applicants will get to choose their marker when applying.
The State Department further stated that they are working on gender markers for non-binary, intersex and others.
“The process of adding a gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming persons to these documents is complex and will take time.” Said the State Government.
Speaking about this, Mary Emily o’ Hare spokesperson for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said, “I’m honestly not sure whether I would be breaking the law” as most of the time they finds it very confusing to have a government issued-ID that doesn’t match their passport.
US State Department has also decided to take a step further that the gender specifying on the passports needs not have to match on other documents.
