Things to do in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam also known as Vizag is a beautiful tourist place in the Indian state of Andra Pradesh. Known as The Jewel of East Coast, Vizag is visited by the tourists to explore its history, culture and beaches. Known for having one of the beautiful stretches of beach and headquarters of Indian Navy Eastern Command this place marks a prominent position for people who want to explore beaches and also know about the Navy. With the city offering so many things to see, #MT sorts out some of the must-visit places in Visakhapatnam.

1) The Submarine Museum

Go inside a real decommissioned Submarine which ports in Visakhapatnam, here you will learn how Submarine works, the duties of captain, sailors and navy persons who are commissioned to work here also you will know how the submarine operates with all the weaponry. The submarine which is stationed here is INS Kursura which is at RK Beach and is one of the must-visit tourist places in Visakhapatnam. This place is visited by almost 500-1000 daily and the numbers increase during the peak tourist period. The Submarine Museum is open from 14:00-21:00 except on Mondays.

2) Dolphin’s Nose

One of Vizag’s beloved tourist spot, Dolphin’s Nose is a beauty by itself, resembling dolphin’s nose rock formation from far, this place is named after its rock formation. There is a historic lighthouse here which you can visit, the place was destroyed by the cyclone which has been restored and has been guiding ships from afar of 35 nautical miles. Visiting this place in the evening or during sunset is the best time where you can view many ships passing by and a vast view of the Ocean.

3) Araku Tribal Museum

Located in Araku valley which is around 36km of area and altitude of 900m above sea level, offers beautiful views of location with streams and waterfalls running through the valley. Home to many coffee plantations and tribal society, the tribal museum is must visit to know how the lifestyle of tribal are here at Araku Valley. If you are lucky, then you can watch Dhimsa dance performance which is local dance performance and you should never miss this.

4) Borra Caves

With its stalagmite and stalactite formations due to limestone, the Borra Caves is spread over 1 sq-km. Being formed over 150 million years ago is known for its natural formed structures such as Shiva Linga, Cow and other formations which are worshipped by local tribesmen. The local cave is lit up so that the tourists can enjoy the scenic beauty which nature has to offer.

5) Vizag Zoo and Kambalakonda Eco Park

For the people who are interested to notice wildlife flora and fauna, the Vizag Zoo is a perfect place to view the animals, Also located is Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Kambalakonda Eco-park which is one of India’s largest zoological park in the country houses various common and rare types of animals such as Indian Leopard, Indian Wild Dog, Spotted Deer, Sambar deer, Indian crested porcupine etc. The Kambalakonda Wildlife sanctuary is a wet evergreen forest home to various exotic flora and fauna and is located in NH16.

6) Matsya Darshini

If you are a fan of aquatic animals, then Matsya Darshini is a place to visit on your stay at Vizag. This place offers various exotic and deep-sea fishes to be viewed and the fishes have been imported from Singapore, Amazon and Malaysia and houses stingrays, piranhas and other imported fishes. Open daily from 09:00-21:00hrs, the ticket price costs 30INR for Adults and 20INR for children.

7) Rama Krishna Beach

One of the popular and crowded beaches of Vizag, Rama Krishna Beach or RK beach has various tourist attraction places that can be visited at this beach. If you have visited most of the places then you can take a simple evening stroll across the seashore where you can view beautiful sunsets and take a bite from street stalls located nearby to the beach.

8) Simhachalam Temple

Dedicated to Lord Narasimha, Simhachalam Temple is one of 32 Narasimha Temple dedicated to the deity in Andra Pradesh. Having a rich history where it can be noted that the temple was worshipped by Kings of Chola Dynasty and there are inscriptions which date back to 9th Century AD. Walking across the perimeter of the temple you’ll notice decoration of temple walls and its 96 pillars with elephants and other animals, the exterior of the temple is decorated with images of Narashima in various poses. Look out for the beautiful stone horse-chariot located inside the temple. The temple is open from 06:00 – 20:00hrs.

9) Rushikonda Beach

If you are in the mood of some adrenaline-filled trip then head over to Rushikonda Beach where you can experience Water Skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing and ATV rides. The beach of Rushikonda is clear and there are fewer tourists too. Enjoy local tasty food along at the beach shacks and take a number of pictures of this tourist destination, also enjoy the adrenaline-filled sports that take your breath away.

10) Ross Hill     VisakhapatnamVisakhapatnam

This place in Vizag offers a unity by Hindus, Muslim and Christians and is must visit place while you are in Vizag. Once you enter you notice a Dargah dedicated to Baba Ishak Madina and Vishnu temple, and on the top of the hill, you will notice a Roman Catholic Church. Climbing atop the hill offers you a quaint sight of the city and filled with shrines dedicated to various gods, also it is one of the picture-worthy places in Visakhapatnam.
