With the ongoing pandemic showing no signs of stopping has affected many businesses and events, it has also affected one of the much-awaited Mela in India. Surajkund Mela in Haryana has been called off this year and it has been canceled after a long 34 years of organizing.
Though there is the availability of vaccines, the spread of the virus is still posing a greater threat and therefore The Government of Haryana has decided to cancel the craftsmen fair.
Surajkund Mela was scheduled from February 01 – February 15, 2021, and this goes on every year during the month of February. This is one of the popular art and crafts fairs that is organized in the outskirts of Delhi. But due to the pandemic, the government has decided to cancel as this is one of the major crowd puller.
But if all turns out good and the virus shows signs of stopping, the new dates for the mela will be announced, the government is planning to hold the festival in the month of April if everything is fine.
Because of the cancellation, the state government will be facing huge losses as the government earns from the ticket sales, setting up stalls, and advertisement.
“If the situation improves in the coming days, the tourism department will organize the fair”.said Rajesh Joon, nodal officer of Surajkund Mela.
Due to the cancellation, even the artisans are affected as this would have been one of the sources of income and due to lockdown, it has been hard for them to earn.
