Mauritius removes most of the covid restrictions

One of the most sought destinations in Africa, Mauritius has finally lifted a number of covid19 restrictions thus boosting the economy of the nation.

The South African nation had put a ban on public gatherings due to the pandemic, however, now the country has scrapped the restrictions and also removed the mandatory wearing of masks in public.

“Difficult decisions had to be taken, including total containment with its consequences on the economy. We have not been in a hurry to reopen our borders and it has been done in stages and we have noted that it is a formula that has worked. Now, it is with confidence that we can enter a new phase.” Said Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth in an address to the nation v

ia national radio.

Mask mandates will be still continued in places such as public transportation and hospitals. Additionally, the full capacity restrictions on public gatherings at bars and restaurants have also been lifted.

The PM also urged the public to take precautions when it comes to wearing masks to help contain the spread of the virus.

Mauritius started welcoming international travellers at the start of October last year only to boost its tourism industry after remaining shut for a long time. But soon after, the restrictions relating to the pandemic were reimposed after the country was hit by a new wave.
