Agra one of the most popular places in India which is a city in Uttar Pradesh and it sits on the banks of river Yamuna. It is situated around 206km south of New Delhi and is one of the 4th populous city in Uttar Pradesh.
A major tourist destination, Agra has many buildings with Mughal styled architecture which includes the famous Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri etc. These all are UNESCO World Heritage Sites which have received many footfalls over the years.
Agra as a city has a rich history and culture. The city was said to be under the hands of ruler Raja Japal who surrendered to Mahmud when he invaded Agra, this was mentioned by a famous Persian Poet from 11th Century Masud Sa’d Salman. After this, the history of the city was not mentioned further in any books. It is also said that Agra used to be a village before the reign of Sikandar Lodi, a ruler from Delhi Sultanate. It was Sikandar Lodi who shifted his capital from Delhi to Agra in the year 1504 until his death. After his death, his son Sultan Ibrahim Lodi constructed many palaces, wells, mosques during his period until when he was defeated in the Battle of Panipat in the year 1526, where he fought against Badshah Babar.
It was under Mughal Rule that Agra flourished where it was then known as Akbarabad. The city of Agra flourished under great Mughal Rulers Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. They built forts, gardens, Akbar the Great built a new city which was outside Akbarabad and named it Fatehpur Sikri, Shah Jahan built the world-famous Taj Mahal etc. During Mughal rule, Agra was the centre for learning arts, commerce and religion.
Currently, Agra is one of the major cities to witness tourist footfalls, it has a population of around 15lakh people with an average literacy rate of 73%.
You can visit Agra by Air, Land and Railways where on Air you need land to Agra Airport. The airport does not have direct flights from International destination hence you need to make a transit at any International Airports and change flights. Flights from Air India’s subsidiary Alliance Air flies to Agra Airport.
By railways, you get many trains from Delhi, Delhi Cant. To Agra Cant. There are several high-speed railways such as Bhopal Shatabdi, Gatimaan Express, Taj Express, Bhopal Express, Garib Rath, Tamil Nadu Express etc. There are train services from major Indian cities such as New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai that has direct rail connectivity to Agra. You can board any of the train services from these cities and deboard at one of the 3 major railway stations in Agra which include Agra Fort, Raja ki Mandi and Agra Cant.
You can visit Agra via Bus services from Delhi. One of the famous expressways in India, Yamuna Expressway connects New Delhi to Agra passing via Greater Noida, Mathura. Agra Lucknow Expressway is another expressway that connects Agra to Lucknow passing through Kannauj.
