Corning Incorporated is a global company which has its specialization in glass, ceramics, optical fibres and other related materials were founded in the year 1851. Then it was called Corning Glass Works was founded by Amory Houghton in Somerville, MA and was originally called Bay State Glass Co. Subsequently, it moved to Brooklyn, NY where the company operated as Brooklyn Flint Glass Works, and finally in the year 1868 under the leadership of Amory Houghton, Jr son of Amory Houghton the company finally moved to the city of Corning, New York which made this city as its home and has been renamed as Corning Glass Works where it held the title till the year 1989. Renamed as Corning Incorporated since the year 1989 they have 5 major business segments and they are: Display Technologies, Optical Communications, Environmental Technologies, Specialty Materials & Life Sciences.
Corning has a long history wherein 1908; it was one of the companies that created bulb-shaped glass encasement for Thomas Edison’s incandescent lamps. Before, these bulbs were made by skilled craftsmen who produced around 100-150per day, and under Corning research and development centre, the company developed a new manufacturing process which helped in mass production of bulbs thus making electric lamps more affordable to masses. In the year 1908, under the leadership of Dr Eugene Sullivan, a glass research centre was set up which became Corning as a name synonymous with Glass research. Subsequently, the research and development made way too many other changes that overcame many challenges that were faced by the common public.
In 1912, American railroads faced a situation where the glass globes of signal lanterns which are needed for safe transportation shattered due to thermal expansion which happened due to changes in temperature. Corning stepped up to solve this issue and by developing heat resistant, low-expansion glasses which were able to withstand heat and cold. By developing this, Corning Glass Company provided this durable material and the lanterns undergone less replacement than before.
Corning originally had been in the glass business, however, they have entered into Telecommunications, Advance materials and Information Display sector in years. However, the history of these goes back in the year 1913 when Dr Jesse Littleton, a physicist from Corning Company tried to bake a cake with a piece of heat resistant glass developed in its lab in 1908, the piece did not shatter due to microwave and heat thus making a new product under Pyrex Brand which became synonymous with High durable cookware and laboratory glass products which are still in use till this date.
Corning was one of the founders and a pioneer of CRT’s which are Cathode Ray Tubes which are used in Television Sets. These tubes were produced during the year 1926-1933. Also, in this time, there was an invention of the high-speed ribbon machine which made to get down the product price of radio sets making them more affordable to consumers.
In the year 1934, Dr J Franklin Hyde, an organic chemist working for Corning developed Silicones which are cross between glass and plastic. This made way to form a new Joint Venture called Dow Corning which concentrated on working on the manufacture of pure silica by way of vaporising the compounds and fusing them which made high purity fused silica which was then used in creating numerous products such as Spacecraft windows, Optical lens, Telescope Mirror and Optical fibres etc. For the innovative discovery, Dr Hyde was inducted in National Inventors Hall of Fame.
In 1944, Corning Chemist Dr Charles F. DeVoe developed Optical and Ophthalmic glass by the process of continuous melting of glass with improvised stirring techniques which made way to manufacture 100 pounds of optical glass per hour. In 1947, Corning developed Lead-Free glass composed light bulbs and tubes were developed which were of less cost and used in TV sets which made them affordable to people around the world.
In 1952, an accidental discovery by Dr S Donald Stookey was made where he noticed the photosensitive glass developed by Corning turns milky white from crystallization due to heat when microwave malfunctions which do not shatter when dropped, thus forming a new business called CorningWare which manufactured Glass-Ceramic ware. In 1961, Corning had an opportunity to be a part of Mercury Spacecraft where it created heat resistant windows for the spacecraft. This made way to be a part where Corning provided heat-resistant window glass for future space endeavours such as Apollo and Gemini.
In 1970, 3 scientists Dr Robert Maurer, Dr Donald Keck, and Dr Peter Schultz developed Optical Fibre cable which helps in maintaining less loss of photons while travelling long distance was developed. This made way to commercialization of fibre optics in telecommunications. In 1982, Corning Labs worked on manufacturing of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) which was formed by Corning’s Fusion Process, this made way for LCD to be used in various flat panels TV and many other accessories.
With these many discoveries and upgrading of technologies, Corning did not stop with what is provided to humankind, in the year 2006, Corning developed revolutionary Epic label-free technology that helped pharmaceutical researchers to identify drug compounds for treating a specific disease. In 2007, Corning scientists developed ClearCurve Optical Fibres which made Optical fibre cables to bend around 90Degree angle which helped in minimizing signal loss and helping data centres and enterprise networks for easy transportation of data,
In the same year of 2007, Cellphone companies approached Corning to find a cover glass that would withstand pressure, scratch and are more damage resistant. Corning finds a way to research thin glass, withstanding scratches, drops and bumps which happen during everyday use and thus Corning Gorilla Glass was formed. This went on to be a part of television sets, tablets, PC’s, Smartphone’s etc which are still in use till this date.
In 2010, Corning Developed Synthemax surface which provides Synthetic and animal-free surface for stem cells culture.
With these many inventions, products and product innovations, Corning Incorporated has won National Medal of Technology and Innovation four times and Corning is one of the world’s biggest glassmakers currently.
