Corning Introduces its toughest Gorilla Glass named Glass Victus

One of the leading mobile phone glassmakers, Corning Inc. lately announced the breakthrough in glass technology where they introduced its toughest gorilla glass named victus.

With over a decade long legacy in delivering tough glass for smartphones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches and other wearables, Gorilla Glass Victus provides consumers and OEMs with significantly better drop and scratch performance compared to competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers.

Speaking about Glass Victus, John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Consumer Electronics said “Corning’s extensive consumer research has shown that improved drop and scratch performance are key components of consumer purchasing decisions,”

China, India and the US being one of the largest smartphone markets in the world a need for tough stain, drop and scratch-resistant glass is a must for every smartphone considering its daily use. Durability is one of the important factors to be considered. When tested against features such as screen size, camera quality, and device thinness, durability was twice as important, and consumers were willing to pay a premium for improved durability.

Corning Inc. had analysed and received feedback from over 90,000 consumers where they were ready to pay more if the phone was more scratch and drop resistant and it has now become the main aspect to consider when buying a new phone.

Speaking about this, John Bayne said, “Dropped phones can result in broken phones, but as we developed better glasses, phones survived more drops but also showed more visible scratches, which can impact the usability of devices,” he continued saying “Instead of our historic approach of asking our technologists to focus on a single goal – making the glass better for either drop or scratch – we asked them to focus on improving both drop and scratch, and they delivered with Gorilla Glass Victus.”

Corning Gorilla Glass Victus fared better in lab tests where it achieved a drop performance of 2m when dropped onto a hard surface where the aluminosilicate glasses from competitors typically fail with the drop of 0.8m, Also, Glass Victus has fared better than it’s predecessor Corning Gorilla Glass 6  with up to 2 times the improvement in scratch resistance. In comparison to its competitors, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is 4 times resistant to scratch than the competitive aluminosilicate glasses.

It is to be noted that Samsung Electronics will be the first brand which will have Gorilla Glass Victus in the near future.
