This Christmas Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrates the completion of a project, his predecessor Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated 16 years ago. The Bogibeel Bridge, India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge, on the mighty Bramhaputra, will be thrown open to traffic by Modi tomorrow. It holds a special significance that the inauguration will be on the birth anniversary of Vajpayee, who revived the dormant project. Completion of this strategic project is a great accomplishment for the nation.
Bogibeel Bridge – Infrastructural Marvel of India Bogibeel bridge will bring good luck for northeast as it will improve connectivity in this region. North East infra development has been a top priority for the NDA Government. The wait is finally over, and the Bridge is going to give smiles to a lot of traders as they consider the bridge as one of the positive outcomes for boosting commerce and trade along with the economy of the country and the region.
This piece of iconic infrastructure is fulfilling a long-cherished dream of people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Hailed as an engineering marvel, the bridge is also a key pre-requisite for the defence of the north-eastern border.
The 4.94 Km Bridge, undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway, extends over Brahmaputra river and comprises two broad gauge rail tracks and a three-lane road on top in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. It will provide connectivity to nearly five million people residing in Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It will also give easy and direct access to the upper Assam from the rest of the country through the North bank, in contrast to the current route through Guwahati in the South bank -which is long and tortuous.
The bridge provides all-weather connectivity between North and South banks of the river in Eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge will link the existing railway network on the South and North bank between Dhamalgaon and Tangani stations.
Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), the company behind the entire creation of the super-structure, has used high-grade materials and sophisticated construction techniques to ensure Bogibeel Bridge has long-term reliability. The HCC-led consortium had DSD Brückenbau, and VNR Infrastructures as other partners.
Building strategy of the Bogibeel Bridge is a testimony to HCC’s globally-practiced ‘Lean Construction’ technique. Bogibeel is India’s first and only fully welded bridge construction marvel. It is also for the first time European codes, and welding standards were adhered to in the construction of a bridge in India.
Bogibeel Bridge: Boosts Tourism along with Economic Benefits Tourist places of Arunachal Pradesh will become more accessible and give a fillip to the tourism industry. The bridge will also cut down the distance to the border with China by 10 hours. The Bridge, by connecting two very important highways of Assam namely the NH37 and NH52, will contribute in enhancing the intra-state and inter-state trade ecosystem. At present, any cargo generated on both the sides consumes at least 10 to 12 hours before it reaches its destination.
Biggest Benefit (Time-Saving) The Bridge’s most significant benefit is the time that it is going to save. As of now, a train journey from Arunachal Pradesh to Assam’s Dibrugarh requires a 500 km detour via Guwahati. Now, the journey will be reduced to less than 100 Km. Also, the train journey between Delhi and Dibrugarh will also come down from 37 hours at present (via Guwahati) to 34 hours – a reduction of 3 hours.The Bogibeel Rail-Road link will significantly reduce this trans-shipment time and will take maximum 2 hours, thus saving the unnecessary extra cost of transportation and time too.
The bridge, situated 17 km downstream of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, spans the Brahmaputra river and will connect the town of Dibrugarh in the south to Dhemaji to the river’s north. The bridge is located just over 20 km away from the Assam- Arunachal Pradesh border and is thus expected to act as an alternative to the Kolia Bhomora Setu, Tezpur in providing connectivity to nearly five million people residing in Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Bogibeel is the fourth rail-cum-road bridge on the Brahmaputra river in Assam. Due to its location, the bridge will be of strategic importance to India as it will significantly enhance India’s ability to transport troops and supplies to its border with Tibet in Arunachal Pradesh. Being located in an area of intense rainfall, construction has been significantly slowed down by the fact that construction largely takes place only during a period of four dry months between November and March.
Bogibeel bridge will provide a connection between the Rangia-Murkongselek section of the North East Frontier Railway on the north bank of Brahmaputra and Lumding–Dibrugarh section that lies to the south of the Brahmaputra. A New Dibrugarh Railway Station, expected to be the largest in the region, has been proposed and is to be linked to the Rangia – Murkongselek line via Chaulkhowa and Moranhat. The Railways have initiated the gauge conversion of the Dhamalgaon to Sisiborgaon rail line to the north of the bridge and commissioned the 44 km Chalkhowa – Moranhat line to the south.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted a video of the first loaded freight train running over the Bogibeel bridge. He said that the development of Bogibeel Bridge is part of a larger effort by PM Narendra Modi to bring about growth & development in the North-East through infrastructure projects, in order to truly integrate the Seven Sisters with the mainland.
