Atal Tunnel in India is now the world’s longest tunnel above 10,000ft.

An iconic engineering marvel in the Himalayas, the Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali with Lahaul, has created a new record. The tunnel has been recognized as the world’s longest single tube highway at height by London’s world book of records.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) spokesperson stated that they had received a certificate from the world book of records. The defense ministry also shared the message stating that the Atal Tunnel has now officially been certified as the World’s Longest Highway Tunnel above 10000ft by the World Book of Records.

The tunnel has been a game-changer for Lahaul and Spiti districts as it offers safe and all-weather connectivity from remote places to the rest of India.

Standing at 9840ft at the south portal situated near Manali, the north portal is at Sissu in the Lahaul valley, which stands at the height of 10,171ft. The tunnel has reduced travel time between Manali and Keylong by two hours.

The tunnel was constructed at INR 3200crore and is also the world’s first tunnel that offers 4G internet connectivity. There are CCTV’s placed every 60m in the tunnel, and an emergency exit installed every 150m.
